Coastal CT Residents ‘Ill-Prepared’ for Severe Storms

Most Connecticut coastal residents are “ill-prepared for the significant safety and economic threats posed by severe coastal storms,” according to the Hurricane Perception of Coastal Connecticut Residents study released March 25 by the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication.

         Among the study’s findings:

• Only 21 percent of Connecticut coastal residents in Zone A (closest to the shoreline) would evacuate in the event of a Category 2 hurricane if they did not receive an official evacuate notice.

• About a third (34 percent) believe it would be safer to stay at home during a Category 2 hurricane, and another third (35 percent) say it’s about 50/50 safer staying at home or evacuating.

• 70 percent of coastal residents are unsure or unaware that their homes are in an evacuation zone as defined by the Army Corps of Engineers.
