Cat. 4 Matthew Moves toward Jamaica, Haiti

         Hurricane Matthew, currently a Category 4 cyclone, is about 390 miles southeast of Kinston Jamaica, Saturday, October 1, 2016, according to the NHC, and is moving toward the west at near 6 mph. Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate its maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph with higher gusts.

         Hurricane Watches are in effect for Jamaica and Haiti. The center of Matthew will move across the central Caribbean Sea today and Sunday, and approach Jamaica and southwestern Haiti Sunday night and Monday, NHC reports.

         Hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area in Jamaica and Haiti on Monday, with tropical storm conditions possible by late Sunday.  Hurricane conditions are possible in eastern Cuba by Monday night, with tropical storm conditions possible by early Monday.

         Some fluctuations in intensity are possible this weekend, but NHC expects Matthew to remain a powerful hurricane through Monday.
