Hurricane Hunting, Forecasts Subjects of Reddit Ask Me Anything

The science of hurricane hunting and improving cyclone forecasts will be the subjects of an upcoming Reddit Science AMA (Ask Me Anything). On Thursday, September 22, 2016, Frank Marks, director of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, and Commander Justin Kibbey, P-3 hurricane hunter pilot in the NOAA Corps, will take questions from Reddit users.

The session will take place on Thursday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. via a link to the Reddit Science AMA chat page to be made available that morning.

Marks has been flying into hurricanes since 1980 and has logged more than 10,000 hours on the P-3 aircraft. He is an expert on tropical cyclones and serves as the research lead of NOAA’s Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP).

Cmdr. Kibbey, a Navy pilot selected for interservice transfer in March 2010, flew his first hurricane mission in September 2010 and has flown approximately 20 flights every year since.
