Early Look Ahead: 2016 Hurricane Season

Although official forecasts for the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season are days and weeks away, at least one prediction is leaning toward a below-average season.

Phil Klotzbach of the Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Meteorology Project notes that the cold, far northern Atlantic Ocean is affecting pressure patterns, winds and sea surface temperatures making the Atlantic not conducive for an active season. His remark came during a presentation at the Nation Hurricane Conference, which on March 24 finished up a weeklong run in Orlando, FL.

Klotzbach added that although there won’t be an El Niño this year, its effects from last year could linger, dampening storm development.
