Rare January Hurricane Threatens Azores

Hurricane Alex, the first of 2016, is expected to approach portions of the Azores Friday morning, January 15, according to the National Hurricane Center. Alex is about 330 miles south of Faial Island in the central Azores and is moving to the north at near 22 mph. Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph with little change expected over the next 48 hours.

A hurricane warning is in effect for several areas in the central Azores. Hurricane conditions are expected to spread over the central Azores by early Friday, NHC reports. Forecasts predict Alex will turn to the north-northeast on Saturday, January 16.

A dangerous storm surge is expected to produce significant coastal flooding near and to the east of the center of Alex. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.
